Description
Connect robotics problems with the mathematics used to describe movement, orientation and uncertainty. The course develops vectors, matrices, calculus and probability through examples such as rover motion, robotic-arm movement and target tracking. Topics include dot products and projection, cross products and torque, rotation matrices, coordinate transformations, eigenvectors and eigenvalues.
The calculus material uses the Jacobian to connect joint movement with an arm's motion and examines gradient descent through a target-reaching example. Probability sections introduce Bayesian updates and a one-dimensional Kalman filter, including the role of Kalman gain. A final control-loop example brings these ideas together to track a moving object using an estimated position, with optional Python scripts for exploring the derivations.
Intended audience: Robotics students seeking the mathematics behind simulation and control code. Software developers moving toward robotics, computer vision or control systems.
